Speedflex high intensity fitness centres will help ensure golfers are fit and raring to go after becoming a PGA Official Supplier.

The company, whose headquarters are in the north-east, has several centres across the UK with its high- intensity, personal trainer led workouts with instant physiological feedback, growing in popularity.

England football legend Alan Shearer is one of several Speedflex ambassadors, with former World No.1 golfer and Ryder Cup winner Lee Westwood also a big fan of the high-tech training programme having been introduced to the concept through his association with Close House.

Speedflex joins the PGA’s network of suppliers as part of its support sponsorship of the ISPS Handa PGA Seniors Championship which for the first time is being staged at Close House Golf Club, Newcastle, in June (11-14).

Utilising a combination of cardio and resistance training, the fitness centres feature unique Speedflex machines which automatically respond to, and create resistance levels, based on the force exerted.

People of all ages and abilities can train together in small groups, led by personal trainers with the high intensity 30 or 45 minute group sessions enabling people to work out with little or no impact, burning high numbers of calories whilst linked to a heart rate monitor.

Speedflex has also carried out research which shows the benefits to golfers in terms of being able to hit the ball further. An eight-week training programme, specifically aimed at golfers, has revealed some incredible results for participants.

The before and after study, where golfers had their overall fitness levels monitored at Speedflex Newcastle and the length and flight of their golf drive off the tee by special Flightscope technology at the Close House Academy, has been hailed a success by all those who took part.

Every golfer who completed the eight-week research programme now drives the ball further, with the average being 20 yards further and one person managing to average an astounding 65 extra yards.

Speedflex Europe’s chairman Graham Wylie explains: “We believe we have created one of the best small training concepts in the world and with growing popularity and membership base, we are now looking to expand further.

“Speedflex is a very effective way for many people to transform their health in a safe, enjoyable and unique environment.”

Robert Maxfield, The PGA’s joint chief operating officer and director of property and commercial, added: “Speedflex fitness centres are both impressive in terms of the state of the art technology, specialised equipment and physiological feedback provided and also for the benefits it can offer to golfers.

“With more and more golfers realising the benefits to their game of greater fitness and flexibility, The PGA is delighted to welcome Speedflex on board as an Official Supplier.”
